MEDICATION FAQs
Why Can't We Just Dispense Medications?

We know it can be frustrating to not just pop in and pick up medications, but there are statutory requirements for all vets in Queensland.

We are unable to prescribe or dispense medications unless there is a valid Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR).
This relationship exists only if your pet has been examined by one of our vets in the last 6 months.

Unfortunately, this also means we cannot just dispense medication that has been prescribed by another vet clinic.
Does it have to be a full examination?
Both Queensland and Australian regulations around VCPR mean our vets need to examine your pet every 6 months for the relationship to be valid. This is even if your pet has been taking the same medication for months or even years.

A full Vet examination allows us to:
-
Check that the dose is still correct based on your pets weight and current health.
-
Identify any new problems or underlying diseases
-
Perform regular blood tests or monitoring to ensure medications stay safe & effective
Why can't I just get antibiotics?

Antibiotics aren't always the answer. Using the wrong antibiotic, or using them when not needed, adds to antimicrobial resistance.
This makes infections harder to treat in both animals and people.

We use antibiotics responsibly by:
-
Only using them when necessary
-
Choosing the right antibiotic for the condition
-
Prescribing the right dose for the right amount of time
Why Is There A Fee For Prescriptions?
Every Prescription is a legal document and carries professional responsibility. As such, prescriptions are not a simple task of cut and paste.

Your prescription fee covers the vets time to:
-
review your animal's medical history
-
Confirm that the medication and dosage are still appropriate
-
Check whether monitoring or follow-up blood tests are required
-
Prepare and legally authorise the prescription
Why Can't I Just Pop In On My Way Past?

For all of the above reasons, writing Prescriptions and dispensing Medication is not an immediate service. Our veterinarians are preparing these for you in between consultations, surgeries and emergencies. There are also some medications which need to be placed on a special order. As such, turnaround times can vary.

We appreciate your patience and recommend giving us at least 48 hours' notice before you run out of medication.
